Loyd's BONUS video- (AND audio!) clip--- # 12!!!---even MORE cool Jeff Lynne stuff!!

Once AGAIN, it's the VERY talented Mr. Jeff  Lynne!!! This is from the (sadly, pretty much IGNORED!) album,'Long Wave', released in 2012. A REALLY FUN video--- mostly because it's goofing on the fact that the multi-talented,former (and once again, current!) E.L.O. front-man really DID play EVERY instrument in the actual recording of the tune!!----

And---- here's one of 'ol Loydster's other favorites from the same album!! A really NIFTY, bouncy version of The old Bobby Darin classic, 'Beyond the sea'!! This is pretty much 'audio only'..... but I DARE you to listen to this without at least tapping your toes a little!!! Bet you can't!!!---

Last, but certainly NOT least, we have an acoustic take on the E.L.O. classic, 'Telephone line'. Also from around the same time 'Long Wave' was released. It's just Jeff, an acoustic guitar, and Richard Tandy, along on the piano!! Good stuff!!---

As promised before, there WILL be a post about this VERY gifted performer, as well as the kinda-famous band he's fronted off and on over the years (and how VERY special their stuff's been to me!!) in the VERY NEAR-future!!!

Loyd's BONUS video-clip!!!---- # 11-- A once-in-a-lifetime 'musical moment'!!!

Here we have the one, the ONLY, Mr. Roy Orbison!!! Backed by a 'team-SUPREME' of musicians and singers!!! (including: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, legendary guitarist James Burton, etc....) This concert, filmed in 1987---just a short time before he left us, all TOO soon--- was topped-off by THIS little number!!! Pretty much his 'signature song'!!!---

All I can say is, if you are a fan of  this kind of music--- OR of Mr. 'O' himself!!!--- seek out this concert on either DVD or blu-ray!! It was released under the title: 'Roy Orbison and friends: a black and white night'. You will be GLAD that you did!! More on Mr. Orbison and his unique brand of 'rock & soul', in a near-future posting!!!

The under-rated, kind-of unappreciated HERO in GREEN!!!!----

HAPPY NEW YEAR gang!!!----   This here post is about a certain hero, named after an insect.... who's favorite color was obviously GREEN!!! Oh, and.... he had a thing for certain items in BLACK,too!!!--

That's right folks, 'ol Loydster is gonna take a trip down memory lane---- with the GREEN HORNET!!!

Now, being the classic pop-culture geek-a-zoid that I am, I'm aware that the character himself, along with his right-hand man Kato, existed for DECADES before the 1966-67 television series!! In fact, 'Mr. Hornet' not only originated on radio, he was even created / originated by the creator of one of radio's original 'men of mystery' himself, the Lone Ranger-- George W. Trendle!! Heck, I even have a number of the old radio episodes... still stashed away in my (STILL pretty sizable!!!) collection of old cassettes.... somewhere in my 'crime-fighting headquarters'!!!

Digging a little deeper into his history, I'll even acknowledge that the character starred in a couple of pretty good 'cliff-hanger' serials that thrilled youngsters back in the early 40s!! BUT---- my focus, just because I personally think it's SO very SLICK, TRICK, and JAZZY-COOL..... and because this is MY  bloggy-woggy-wing-a-ding-thing--- is the 1966 to 1967 (sadly) very short-lived T.V. series!!

When this show first aired, around the time 'little Loydster' was only 2 to 3 years old--- I'll admit it was probably just a slight 'blip' on my 'superhero awareness radar-screen'!! I do vaguely recall watching it with some of my older cousins, way back when...... but that's about all I remember!!! A certain 'Caped Crusader' REALLY snagged my tiny-little-Loyd imagination, remember???

No, 'Green Hornet', the T.V. series.... was one of the kind of old shows that fluttered around the fringes of the Loydster's memory and awareness. Popping up at oddball times on dinky little independent stations at weird hours over the years... showing up YEARS later in the early days of the FX  cable network... a stray collectible relating to the show popping up here and there when I least expected to even see them!!

Maybe it's the very BRIEF time it originally came on the scene, and low number of episodes (there were only 26!!), -- and it's SUPER-cool vibe (think James Bond, crossed with the EARLIEST version of the Batman of the comics, crossed with an early 60s Frank Sinatra movie!!!)--- that's kept me interested and intrigued by this show, it's main character, and yes.... his COOL-AS-ICE  right-hand man, Kato--- played to FROSTY perfection by the one, the ONLY Bruce Lee!!! Let's check out the opening sequence, that greeted viewers each week!!!----

AND--- let's NOT forget that oh-so TRICKED-OUT ride of his!!! The 'Black Beauty'!!! Here's a segment that, even though it was repeated a LOT in the earlier episodes.... is a favorite memory of not ONLY myself, but thousands of custom-car / radical-ride-FANATICS everywhere!!!----

Yes, by the way..... that familiar voice in the opening credit sequence, is INDEED the voice of the 'Bat-announcer' himself.... Mr. William Dozier!! Who also was the executive producer on 'Green Hornet'. Unlike the Batman show, the opening narration, is the ONLY time you hear his voice!! (OR hear narration of ANY sort, for that matter!!)

Through the wonder of Youtube---- that VAST treasure-chest of  (no doubt) MILLIONS of hours of  shamelessly GEEKY  entertainment (oh, I'm aware of it's problems, but it's chock-full of MY kind of 'getting your GEEK on'!!!) I've recently been able to watch ALL 26 episodes of the series--  pretty much for the first time, that I can remember, anyway!!! Over a period of a few weeks, I watched a couple of episodes each weekend (the way I'd advise anyone to watch ANY old T.V. program!!). I've got to say, it all pretty much holds up VERY well. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say.... it was a show 'ahead of it's time'!!!

I also think the VERY thing that makes it the 'cult favorite' that it's become over the decades, is probably why it didn't last, during it's initial run!!! It was NOT done in the 'campy', 'let's goof on the characters' or 'over-the-top'-style of it's contemporary companion-show--- featuring the 'Caped Crusaders'!!! (and yes, having the complete 'Batman' series on DVD, I'm aware they 'crossed over' in a two-part adventure!!---a truly ODD adventure it was, too!!!)

It was, more or less, a pretty straight-ahead 'action / adventure' program!! I don't think audiences, at the time of it's original airing, knew exactly WHAT to do with it!! And--- that's just too bad!! Because, again--- I think it (STILL) has this COOL -vibe that was (and IS) SO full of potential!!

Also, sadly... after searching ALL OVER the 'net and various OTHER nooks & crannys--- I've found that no 'official' DVD collection of this show exists!!! As far as I've also been able to determine, the series is in 'public domain'!!! Meaning the original holders to the rights (20th Century Fox!!???!)--- have NO interest in preserving it, or even putting a 'bare-bones' 'complete series' set of discs out there!! Outside of all the other reasons that is SO wrong--- it's also, just kinda sad!!

Rumors persist, that yet ANOTHER version of this character (and no doubt Kato, along with the WICKEDLY-SMOOTH 'Black Beauty!!) is headed  for another shot at the silver screen!!! Let's hope that it's LIGHT YEARS away from the SORRY spectacle that was the 2011 FIASCO that STUNK -UP theaters!! This is one nearly 80-year-old 'mystery man' that deserves better!!! If they even do a film with 75 percent of the amount of JAZZY-COOL-SWANKINESS that the 66-67 series had.... they MAY just get it right next time around!!

Meantime, those of us who OH-SO-DIG the original series, still have it (and the oddball collectible here and there!!) to enjoy!!! Always and FOREVER!!! MANY thanks to the folks who have posted those old episodes on Youtube, by the way!!!

New posts coming soon!!! (PROMISE---AGAIN!!)

Once again, life's been doing to the 'ol Loydster what it looks like's been happening to the poor sap in the above doodle!!! BUT--- never fear, faithful friends!!! I shall indeed return with more SHAMELESS GEEKY-GOOFINESS, in the VERY near future--- hopefully within the next couple weeks!!

One special and unique lady!!!--- OR how a 'whirl-wind' courtship turned into over a HALF-CENTURY of loving, living and laughter!!!

My folks on their first anniversary,September - 1964!

The happy couple above, are--- of course-- my mom and pops. At the point they were celebrating their first big wedding anniversary. They would go on to celebrate 54 more of these before mom's passing on November 4th.

Mom had been battling various illnesses for the past few years, as has my dad....so my sisters and I had been kind of bracing for an extended period of more of the same, or for something to come along and wallop my dad again!! But, mom's SUDDEN passing on the evening of  Sunday, November 4th really caught us all pretty much by surprise!!

I know this here bloggy-woggy-wing-a-ding is usually about fun and the 'ol Loydster being a goofy-geek-a-zoid!!! But, I felt like I needed to stop with the usual silliness for a moment, and pay tribute to not only my mom, but to BOTH of my parents!!! Two people who spent a life-time-PLUS together. Living, loving and raising my sisters and I as best they could--- with considerable help from the Almighty himself, of course!!!

The MOST amazing thing about their love story, at least to me---- is they met, were engaged, and married... all within a WEEK!!! AND--- they managed to STAY married.... for 55 YEARS!!!
Below are some images I snagged from various old photo albums. Notice the GENUINE smiles and laughter going on in most ALL of them??? These two people REALLY loved each other.... AND their family. and they REALLY were, most ALL of  their years together.... HAPPY with each other!!!

Another one from the first year or so of Loyd and Mary's marriage!
Around 1966-67 or so. Still a couple of young pups!

......And then a certain youngster named after his dad came along!!! (Loyd, of course!) Check out my pop's CREW-CUT!! Talk about 'kids having kids'!!! Mom was 19, and dad was almost 21 when I entered the picture!!
Mom's VERY pregnant with  my sis, Kathy-- in the first pic, and here we are about a year later--- about 1969.

From around 1976, up 'til the early 90s. Dad was the hard-preachin' pastor... mom his faithful companion, song / praise-leader, Sunday school teacher, and sometimes 'women' s ministry' leader!!! Truly an unbeatable team, these two!!
These next couple of pics are personal favorites of mine. I'll share the reasons why below----

The beautiful little Miss Mary Shinault (my mom!)---- her whole life out ahead of her!!! About age 16!!

'Ol Loydster and his folks, around 2009.

Now, you may be asking yourself--- WHY these two pictures, taken SO many years apart.... would be some of my personal favorites. Well.... a BIG part of it, is what the folks in the pics are doing. Those are genuine smiles on those faces, gang. These were people who had a REAL, true happiness. The kind that's deep down, and the good Lord gives to you!! No amount of tough times and rough moments can steal THAT kind of joy!

Mom and pops had some ROUGH times in Texarkana (where the pic of the three of us was taken), including dad going through a triple-bypass surgery!!! But, we also had a number of really fun visits with them there, and--- as ALWAYS with my folks--- LOTS of laughter!! The picture reminds me of that. I've NEVER looked at it, and NOT smiled. Not once.

The older of the two----taken when my mom was a young teen, is also special to me for another reason. One that's even MORE special to me.... now that she's left us!! Look at the young lady's smile in the picture. Go ahead, scroll back up and check it out.... I'll wait. ----- Ok ---- that smile, that open expression of joy that fills my  mom's face..... when she was SO young, her life spread-out in front of her..... THAT is what's special to me about that particular picture. Her smile. The SAME smile I saw MANY times throughout the years. The smile that I'll always see in my minds eye, and my memory. Whenever I think of my mom!!!

There's SO much more that could be said here. So much more I could comment on and 'carry on' about!!! But There's just not enough space to do that like I VERY easily could!!! I will say one more thing though!!! It's how I believe--- like a LOT of folks do, that you probably inherit things, character traits and personality 'quirks', from your parents.

My 'practical side'.... the side that has all the common-sense and the work-ethic---THAT is from my dad. Pops has ALWAYS lived the example in front of me, and I'm ETERNALLY grateful for that!! But..... the creative side... the love for music.... the love for old classic pop-culture... the ability to face WHATEVER circumstances come at me,with an INDESTRUCTIBLE sense of humor..... that was a GIFT from my one, my ONLY..... MOM!!! for that---- I'll ALWAYS be thankful. I love and miss you dearly, mom-o-mine!!! 'Til we meet again on the 'other side'!!! I'll meet you behind that 'heavenly piano'!!! we'll sing for a couple thousand years or so--- and NEVER get hoarse or forget the words!!!

(MUCH thanks to my sister, Kathy--- who put up some of these same pics on her facebook page!! Also, LOTS of bear-hugs and kisses to my 'baby sister', Lisa. Even though there's not any pics of you in this collection I've put up, 'little sis'---- know that BOTH of my sisters were right in the CENTER of my heart while I put this post together!!! Your older bro loves you BOTH.... very much!!!)

In loving memory - Mary Louise Ferrell - July 31st,1945 - November  4th, 2018
Now you have a NEW heart and PERFECT lungs, mom! I'm SURE you're singing and playing a heavenly piano, in the presence of the Lord! Your son, 'ol Loydster, already misses you dearly!
